POURQUOI L'HOMME VINT LE DERNIER DANS LA CREATION

Cette grande et précieuse [1] chose qu'est l'homme n'avait pas encore trouvé place dans la création. II n'était pas naturel que le chef fît son apparition avant ses sujets, mais ce n'était qu'après la prépa­ration de son royaume que devait logiquement être révélé le roi, lorsque le Créateur de l'univers eut pour ainsi dire préparé le trône de celui qui devait régner [2]. Voici la terre, les îles, la mer et sur eux, la voûte du ciel comme un toit. Des richesses de toutes sortes avaient été placées dans ces palais : par richesses, j'entends toute la création, tout ce que la terre produit et fait germer, tout le monde sensible, vivant et animé et aussi (s'il faut compter dans ces richesses ces matières que leur beauté rend précieuses aux yeux des hommes, tel que l'or, l'argent et ces pierres tant convoitées) tous ces biens que Dieu cache en abondance dans le sein de la terre comme en des celliers royaux. Alors Dieu fait paraître l'homme en ce monde, pour être des merveilles de l'univers et le contemplateur et le maître : il veut que leur jouissance lui donne l'intelligence de celui qui les lui fournit, tandis que la grandiose beauté de ce qu'il voit le met sur les traces de la puissance inef­fable et inexprimable du Créateur [3].

Edmund the blessed, king of the East Angles, was wise and honorable and by his excellent conduct ever glorified Almighty God. He was humble and devout, and continued so steadfast that he would not yield to shameful sins, nor in any direction did he bend aside his practices, but was always mindful of true doctrine. If you are made a chief man, do not exalt yourself, but be among men as one of them. He was bountiful to the poor and like a father to widows, and with benignity guided his people ever to righteousness, and controlled the violent, and lived happily in the true faith.

A Wandering Aramaean

" You shall make this response before the Lord your God: 'A wandering Aramean was my father; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, we cried to the Lord, the Godof our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw ouraffliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, andwith signs and wonders; and he brought us into this placeand gave us this land, a land flowing with milk andhoney.
